In previous posts, I chatted with y’all about my “big picture” goals for myself. I still need to talk about the baby step goals I have for this year, to propel me towards the big picture.
I decided I will blog about each baby step and why I chose that to be a “goal” for this year.
Why Brush Lettering?
When I was a kid, I loved learning to handwrite. I wouldn’t say my handwriting was beautiful, though. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t pretty.
I tried to learn calligraphy when I was a teen by using books. The descriptions and the instructions confused me. I am a visual person that enjoys seeing how something is done. Because it was so frustrating for me, I gave up.
When brush lettering started to become a “thing,” it fascinated me! It seemed more fun and artistic than formal calligraphy. I toyed around with the idea of trying it out for myself, but I thought I was too busy to try it.
As I started getting more into the Planner community, I noticed there were a lot of ladies who had gorgeous handwriting because they put in the time and effort to learn. It took their planners up a notch.
I started checking out resources and books, and still felt overwhelmed, until I came across Kelly Creates Learn Bouncy Brush Lettering. It was simple, straightforward, and easy to figure out. Also, watching Youtube videos on how to hold my pen and how much pressure to apply on the brush pens was very helpful.
How Does Lettering Fit in with my Big Picture Goals?
- I love writing Bible verses out. It helps cement the Word in my mind and comforts my heart, allowing my faith to grow.
I wanted to make these verses beautiful. Eventually, I can hand letter Bible verses and send them to people to encourage and strengthen them in their faith walk. This is part of my goal to encourage others to love Jesus more, and It is also apart of my goal to increase in my confidence towards God and His Word. - Practicing brush lettering has improved my own handwriting which will allow me to send decipherable letters and notes to people. Sending handwritten notes and letters to people encourages them as well. People do not often get “happy mail” from others these days.
- Writing beautiful Bible verses, and sending them to people along with encouraging notes, will help me not to think despairing thoughts, and help me be more loving, positive, hopeful, content, and grateful. It helps me to seek God’s mercy every day.
- I can create more art with it, and gift my art to people.
- Hand lettering helps me de-stress and feel more peaceful with life.
- It’s a “measurable” goal that I can work on, and not feel overwhelmed that I am not “accomplishing” greatness fast enough. It’s something I can “see” progress and have results, which will encourage me to try “bigger” things in the future that may need a lot more time to work on.
- It is also something for “me” to fuel my creative passions. If I am not doing something creative, I lose my joy and zest for life. Which is another big picture goal I have; To be known for joy and zest for the life God has given me.
So there you have it. That’s why I chose to learn hand lettering as a baby step goal towards the Big Picture Goals I have for my life.
